Spoiler Free Review - A Good Girls Guide to Murder - By Holly Jackson

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read this book as part of @Bearyintobooks Book Club

It was my first online book club experience and my first ever YA (Young Adult) novel.

A Good Girls Guide to Murder is the first instalment to this three-part YA murder mystery series.

It was such an easy and fast-paced read, I flew through it. I found it wonderfully engaging and heartwarming with a good amount of tension. Jackson creates likeable characters and a half-decent mystery plot. Our protagonist Pippa is a conscientious, intuitive and gutsy teenager. I wish I was more like her at that age. She begins a school project focussing on the role of the media in a case that had shocked their community. A case she believes was mishandled.

“I’m not sure I’m the good girl I once thought I was. I’ve lost her along the way.”

I loved the mixed format, from diary entries and mind maps to emails texts and phone transcriptions, allowing us to piece the puzzle together along with Pip.

There were flaws in the storyline and some parts felt a little ridiculous but if I had read it as a teenager, I would have loved it. I was not overly surprised by the outcome, but there were a few twists I didn’t see coming.

I really enjoyed it, despite my criticisms. I was totally hooked from start to finish. I would recommend the series to a young adult, or anyone interested in the genre and I will probably read the rest of the series because I enjoy the characters and am curious to see what comes next.

Have you read any YA lately?
