Reader, I Married Him Edited By Tracy Chevalier

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars

The line ‘Reader, I Married Him’ if you’re not familiar with it, is the happy, albeit unconventional ending to Charlotte Bronte’s novel, Jane Eyre.

Tracy Chevalier is the bestselling author of Girl with the Pearl Earring. She has cleverly put together this anthology to pay homage to Charlotte Bronte’s iconic and much-loved novel. A collection of short, impactful stories by 21 different writers. They have all enthusiastically taken up the infamous line ‘Reader, I Married Him’ and created the stories it has urged them to write.

If you’re a fan of Jane Eyre, then this is a must-read. If you’ve never had the chance or motivation to read it, you can still enjoy this collection.

The highly talented contributors take their themes, plots and characters from the novel, but they each use their own individual voice and perspective to create something new and refreshing.

Every story is so varied and multi-toned.

Admittedly, all of them are loosely about marriage, but even more so they are about relationships and love. They offer a different viewpoint to the characters in Jane Eyre as well as what marriage is, challenging the happily ever after with realism and astute emotional context.

I loved this collection, and it made me want to read Jane Eyre again. I highly recommend it.

What have you read recently that spurred on a read/re-read of another book?
